Hitched—the most Shakin’ of Shindigs

By in DIY, Love, Personal, Weddings

Well, yesterday i shared day one of our crazy wedding bonanza—the Hitchin’ Hootenanny (did I forget to mention I made my dress… from a vintage bedsheet? One of our guests looked and me and said, “hey, I used to have those!). I went on and on about my discoveries about marriage. Today, I will reiterate the primary point from yesterday:

Marriage is an opportunity—to subvert tradition, discover truths about one’s self and create new languages.

Beyond that, I say let’s just make today about glorious photos from day two of our crazy weddingfest—the Shakin’ Shindig at the Pearl Hotel in the Point Loma area of San Diego. The Pearl is a rather rad place… it’s a converted 60s motel, with much mid century goodness. It was cocktails and dapperness and coy delights all in one. Below you shall find a bizarre and yet glorious mix of good old-fashioned boxing handmade robes, darling vintage cocktails, handmade everything, a kidney-shaped pool, beach balls, ice cream cone cake pops, string lights, bunting, sparklers, delicious food, surprise songs from yours truly, surprise synchronized swimmers, and everybody might just have ended up jumping fully-clothed into the pool. You’ll have to scroll to find out! Yup, we packed a bloody ton into our wedding bonanza, and had a blazin’ ball doing so. Did I mention we played Scott and Jasmine romance charades instead of having a ceremony? And boxing-entranced to the rocky theme? So, stay tuned tomorrow for all the photobooth images, which might just be my very favorites. For now, I leave you with James Moes’ oh-so-good images from day two. Without further adieu…

Boy, do I ever love Scott. Boy, do I ever love our friends and family. Boy, do I ever love love. Let me leave you with my big idea and driving mantra through this event (and you can see the chalkboard sign I made for it above):

Listen to your heart, even if it takes you all the way to California.

I still need to make it out west to California (never been). Shame on me, I know!

Thanks so much to you all. I really, really, really loved it all. I think the thing about our event was that it was so much about our little community. There may have only been sixty people there, but I truly felt like the thethers were so strong… everyone was so on-board and full of the love and joy and magic we were experiencing. It was just so special. As someone who was largely indifferent to having a wedding of my own for many years—I have changed my tune!

  8. Everything about this wedding is just awesome sauce: the clothing, the settings, the style, the synchronized swimmers!! And you did an amazing job capturing all of those moments. I only wish I were back in San Diego — we’d totally be meeting for tea.

I am in love with you. There, I said it. Scott will have to get over it. But I do. Your photography is superb (relating to all your other posts, for I know someone else did these – and a FINE job, at that). Your technique is exactly one I have been striving for since day one, nine years ago when I picked up my dad’s old Canon AE-1. I found your blog through Sara Lynn Paige, another favorite photographer of mine (and designer of my web site!). I look forward to more of your work. Vintage, early ’60s is my favorite. I think this is by far the best wedding I’ve ever seen on film. And I love the tilt shift photos! So cool.

Okay. I am done with my rant. Toodles!

Brandi—oh my gosh, yes, tea! If you’re ever back in town, I so would love to chai it up. Much gratitude for these warm words!

Sarah—Haha, you are so sweet! I’ll let Scotty know he has some competition. Thank you so much for these lovely compliments. I hope you’re still heavily using the AE-1… incidentally, that’s how I first really flirted with photography. Picked up my dad’s Nikon FE when I was in college. I was epically terrible at the time, but I suppose it started something good!
